Sobre Este Material

Subfloor adhesive is a construction-grade polyurethane or solvent-based adhesive applied to the top of floor joists before laying subfloor panels. Popular brands include PL Premium, Loctite PL 400, and Liquid Nails Subfloor & Deck. The adhesive creates a permanent bond between the joist and the panel that eliminates floor squeaks caused by nail pops and panel movement. Applied in a continuous 1/4-inch bead along each joist, one 28-oz tube typically covers 40 to 50 square feet of floor area. Polyurethane-based adhesives (PL Premium) offer the strongest bond and are waterproof, while solvent-based adhesives are less expensive and cure faster. Cold-weather formulations are available for winter construction when temperatures drop below 40 degrees F. Expect to pay $4 to $8 per tube, and a standard 800 sq ft floor requires 16 to 20 tubes.

Consejos de Instalación

  • Apply a continuous bead — do not dot the adhesive.
  • Work in sections and lay panels before adhesive skins over.
  • Use a caulk gun with a 1/4" nozzle.

Errores Comunes a Evitar

  • Skipping adhesive to save time — squeaky floors are hard to fix after the fact.
  • Applying adhesive on wet or frozen joists.
