Sobre Este Material

Bridging (also called blocking or cross-bridging) consists of short pieces of lumber or metal straps installed between floor joists to prevent twisting, distribute concentrated loads, and stiffen the overall floor system. There are three main types: solid blocking uses the same dimension lumber as the joists cut to fit snugly between them; wood cross-bridging uses 1x3 or 2x2 boards installed in an X pattern; and metal cross-bridging uses pre-formed steel straps. Solid blocking is the most common in modern construction because it also serves as a fire block and provides a nailing surface for pipes, ducts, and subfloor edges. The IRC requires bridging at mid-span for joists exceeding 8 feet of unsupported span, with additional rows at 8-foot intervals for longer spans. Metal cross-bridging costs about $1 to $2 per pair, while solid blocking uses offcut lumber and costs only the labor.

Consejos de Instalación

  • Install solid blocking or metal cross-bridging.
  • Stagger blocking for easier nailing access.
  • Nail both top and bottom flanges of cross-bridging.

Errores Comunes a Evitar

  • Installing bridging before subfloor is down — nail the top only, wait until subfloor is on to nail the bottom.
  • Using undersized blocking for the joist depth.
